Arthritis is a term derived from the Greek...
It’s a term used to describe more than 100 different types of disorders. Some of these diseases are characterized by joint symptoms. Others are not.
When a joint hurts, this is called “arthralgia.”
When a joint is inflamed (swelling, redness, heat, pain), this is termed “arthritis.”
Some types of arthritis may not involve the joint per se. Examples might be tendonitis/tendinopathy or bursitis. Others may not involve the joints at all. An example would be vasculitis which is a serious disorder that causes inflammation of blood vessels.
Some types of arthritis affect joints in a symmetric fashion. Rheumatoid arthritis is an example. Other types of arthritis affect joints in a non-symmetric fashion. An example would be psoriatic arthritis.
Arthritis can result from wear and tear (osteoarthritis) or it may be due to autoimmune factors (systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis).
Crystals can cause arthritis when they deposit out in joints and cause inflammation (gout, pseudogout).
And infections also can lead to arthritis (rheumatic fever, Lyme disease, gonorrhea).
Malignancies can also lead to joint symptoms (lung cancer, kidney cancer).
Some types of arthritis are common (osteoarthritis).
Others are rare (Kashin –Beck disease, Behcet’s disease, Familial Mediterranean Fever, ochronosis, etc.)
And arthritis can be associated with symptoms involving other organ systems including the skin, eyes, brain, heart, lungs, bowel, and kidneys. These types of arthritis that are systemic often are also accompanied by fever, weight loss, and night sweats).
