Most forms of back pain are due to strains (excessive stretching of muscles) or muscle spasm related to arthritic changes in the spine.
The common denominator is that the pain is coming from tight muscles.
Pain relief can be obtained through the following:
•For the initial 24 hours after an injury, ice packs are probably better than heat. Ice packs coupled with strict rest often alleviate spasm. Using a can to unload the back is quite useful during the first 24 hours.
•Topical joint cream rubs. We use a preparation called Blue Relief in our clinic. It is a soothing cream containing aloe and emu oil, as well as other anti-inflammatory ingredients. These ingredients have been proven to alleviate pain and inflammation.
•Topical sprays are also sometimes helpful.
•Warm showers, baths, swimming in a heated pool, and gentle stretching exercises are beneficial for most people. Hot packs, moist hot towels, massage, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) work well also.
•Acetaminophen and anti-inflammatory drugs can also relieve pain. Sometimes anti-inflammatory drug is given as a cream to
rub on the affected joint - this also reduces the risk of side-effects.
•If you have access to massage, that is another useful treatment modality.
•Over the long run, if you have osteoarthritis as the cause of your back pain and are overweight, you will need to lose weight, and exercise regularly under medical supervision.
•A program of rehabilitation including physical and occupational therapy, stress reduction, and relaxation are helpful.
•A firm mattress and back support pillows are useful.
•Alternative therapies such as acupuncture are helpful in cases where other therapies don’t work.
