Gout cure.com is a website that sells “GoutCure”, a proprietary blend of herbs including: aged garlic, artichoke powder, turmeric, milk thistle and yucca.

These ingredients are harmless and may benefit different medical conditions.

However, the one study presented on the site to show that Gout Cure works for gout is severely flawed for the following reasons:

Of the 110 eligible patients who had elevated blood uric acid levels at the start of the study, only 61 were available for entrance into a one month study. (What’s odd is that it is entirely unclear whether these patients actually had gout.)

What I mean is this…these were patients who had elevated blood uric acid but no prior history of a definitive diagnosis of gout. The diagnosis of gout is based on a set of published criteria and there is no mention as to whether the patients involved in the trial fulfilled those criteria.

An elevated blood uric acid by itself does not make a diagnosis of gout. Other medical conditions and even some medications can cause elevation in serum uric acid. Many people with elevated blood uric acid have not joint symptoms.

Evaluation of clinical arthritis type indicated that the patients had a variety of disorders, mostly osteoarthritis. This is a different type of arthritis from gouty arthritis. Generally, the presence of other types of arthritis is an exclusion for clinical trials of a specific type of arthritis.

The changes reported in serum uric acid between the treated group and non-treated group were not that impressive.

Six of the 61 patients did not complete the one-month study.

A one month study is not long enough to evaluate a chronic condition such as gout.

Finally there was no correlation between the “declines” in blood uric acid and clinical symptoms. What is Gout Cure supposed to do?

My impression is that this preparation does not contain harmful ingredients. It has not been shown to be effective for patients with documented gouty arthritis. I would not recommend it as a treatment for gout without better more meaningful data.

There are many effective medical therapies for gout and a patient should seek out a reputable physician first. Gout, if not treated appropriately, can lead to kidney damage and severe deforming arthritis.
