There are more than 100 different types of arthritis. Some are associated with inflammation and others are not.
Conventional approaches to arthritis treatment involve prescription medications, physical therapy, patient education, and lifestyle changes.
Here are some pointers:
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease where the immune system goes wacky and attacks the joints -and in some severe cases- other body organs. The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is still not well understood.
Rheumatoid is characterized by severe joint pain and stiffness, especially in the mornings. Joints affected by rheumatoid include the hands, knees, wrists, knees and feet. Other common symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis include swelling, weakness, fatigue, weight loss and mild fever.
Prescription strength non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are commonly used to treat arthritis initially. An alternative is low dose prednisone.
For rheumatoid arthritis, newer biologic therapies are often added to methotrexate to put the disease into remission.
However, there are also a number of natural and safe supplements that have mild anti-arthritic properties that can be used to treat arthritis. These include antioxidant containing preparations such as:
•Borage oil - may partially relieve symptoms rheumatoid arthritis
•Flaxseed- contains anti-inflammatory compounds such as gamma linoleic acid
•Fish oil (EPA/DHA) - may partially relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
•Vitamin E - protects many tissues, including joints, against oxidative damage
•Glucosamine/chondroitin- effective or Osteoarthritis
•SAM-e – a sulfa derivative that may be useful for both osteoarthritis as well as fibromyalgia
Some herbs that may be helpful in arthritis include:
•Boswellia - reduced symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in most reports
•Cayenne - (topical) - can help relieve pain when rubbed onto arthritic joints
•Devil’s claw - exhibits anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions
•Turmeric - the active constituent in turmeric, curcumin, is a potent anti-inflammatory compound that protects the body against free radical damage
•Thundergod vine- a Chinese herb shown in a randomized study to be effective for RA.
•Ginger root- possibly effective for osteoarthritis.
•Cognitive behavioral therapy teaches organizational skills, empowerment, goal setting, and other life-management techniques. Good for fibromyalgia.
•Meditation and prayer are also beneficial in managing the pain
•Yoga has been shown to improve joint flexibility
•Acupuncture. Most studies have not demonstrated a benefit for rheumatoid arthritis. It may be effective for osteoarthritis of the knee. Seems to work best when used in conjunction with anti-inflammatory medicines.
